A Practical Guide for Your Trip to Oudenaarde

If you’re planning a trip to Oudenaarde, do you know how to get around? Do you know the best place to stay or where to find the closest shops? Being in a new place can be daunting when you don’t know the area or how things work. Don’t worry, Leopold Hotel Oudenaarde is here to help! Read this practical guide to visiting Oudenaarde or, if you’re already here, ask one of the friendly hotel staff and they’ll be happy to recommend the best places to go or give directions. We look forward to welcoming you for a trip to Oudenaarde.

How to get to Oudenaarde

Getting here from overseas means you’ll need to know the closest airport to the city. The nearest airport to Oudenaarde is Lille Lesquin (LIL) south of Lille, a city in northern France. However, there are better options for getting to Oudenaarde. Belgian Railways (NMBS/SNCB) operates a train from Brussels Airport-Zaventem to Oudenaarde hourly. Tickets cost €16 – €18 and the journey takes a comfortable 1 hour 40 minutes. You can get between Amsterdam’s main airport Schiphol to Oudenaarde in just under three hours by train and tickets cost between €60-100. Book first class on the train for the best experience. If you’re staying at Leopold Hotel Oudenaarde, it’s about a 15-minute walk from the train station. You can drive between Brussels and Oudenaarde in around 55 minutes depending on traffic.

Getting Around

Oudenaarde is a fairly compact city that’s easy to get around on foot. De Lijn is the local bus service and the main stop in the city centre is Oudenaarde Markt the city square of Oudenaarde and its main attraction. If you arrive by train follow the ‘Stationstraat’ to the Tacambaro Square and then continue via the ‘Hoogstraat’ or ‘Nederstraat’ until you reach the city square. You can also explore the waterways by boat via the quay on the river Scheldt located at the archaeological site of Ename.

If you’re driving, the hotel’s car park is underground and must be pre-booked at an additional cost. There is also a free car park located just outside the entrance of Leopold Hotel Oudenaarde. The closest place to charge an electric car is Allego Charging Station on Gentstraat. If you’re cycling Leopold Hotel Oudenaarde has secure storage for your bike and space for washing and maintenance.

Practical Information

Oudenaarde is a modern city with all of the amenities you’d expect from any city. The currency in Belgium is Euro and the most spoken languages are Dutch, Flemish, and French, depending on the region. In Flanders, it is mostly Dutch with a distinct accent. Most shops in Belgium are open from 10am until 6pm, Monday to Saturday. Shops are closed on Sundays so plan your visit carefully if you’re planning some retail therapy!

Highlights of Oudenaarde include Oudenaarde’s late Gothic town hall with its Cloth Hall and famous tapestries, its Beguinage and the MOU municipal museum. Visit the historic centre of Ename, the Museum of Flanders and enjoy a beautiful city walk to get to know the city a little better. It’s also a mecca for cyclists who want to explore the Flemish Ardennes with routes ranging from easy to challenging. Each Thursday from 6am to 2pm there is a weekly market in the city centre at Grote Markt, Hoogstraat & Nederstraat that’s well worth a visit.
